Netflix and Greta Gerwig are bringing a reimagined version of C. S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew to the screen. Lewis’s Christian faith shaped Narnia’s understanding of creation, good and evil, sacrifice, and redemption. For Faith Driven Consumers—Christ-followers whose faith guides everyday choices—those foundations are central to what makes these stories meaningful.
Netflix and Greta Gerwig have revealed creative departures from Lewis’s original Narnia: Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, David Bowie-inspired imagery, British rock influences, and a move to 1955. These choices raise a consequential question for Christ-followers: will this reimagining carry Lewis’s Christian meaning forward—or change what the story communicates about Christ, faith, and redemption?
- Aslan’s portrayal. Meryl Streep voices Aslan, whose revealed appearance draws on David Bowie. How will the film communicate the identity, authority, and character C.S. Lewis gave Narnia’s Christ figure?
- Music, imagination, and transformation. Gerwig describes a rock-opera vision shaped by music, imagination, and personal transformation. Will it reinforce—or redirect—C.S. Lewis’s Christian understanding of hope and renewal?
- The move to 1955. Gerwig connects the postwar setting to the childhoods of her musical heroes. That changes the children’s cultural context and the story’s timeline. How will this new frame shape the Christian meaning Lewis gave Narnia?
