A few weeks ago, we told you about Sophie Cunningham—and her warning that Christians in the WNBA can feel pressure to stay quiet:

“Sometimes they want to hush you.”

“Sometimes they want to hush you,” Sophie Cunningham warned after speaking openly about her Christian faith. Since then, Seattle Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton reportedly screamed and cursed at two teenage fans holding signs supporting Sophie. The team apologized and suspended Keaton for five games.

Sophie has also taken a series of hard hits, culminating in a hit to the head that was ruled a Flagrant 2 foul; the opposing player charged with the foul was ejected.

Sophie has been called “divisive” and questioned for receiving so much attention. But the attention has followed the reaction to her refusal to keep her faith quiet. Despite the pressure and hostility, Sophie continues to speak openly about her Christian faith, her values, and protecting women’s sports.

Sophie is the catalyst. United action through FDC is the response.

The same pressure has surfaced beyond the WNBA.

In MLB, FDC stood with Landen Roupp after he was threatened with discipline for writing a Bible verse on his cap, and with Trevor Williams as he publicly stood on his Christian convictions. In the NBA, we stood with Jaden Ivey as he boldly shared his faith.

Different leagues. Different circumstances. The same larger question: Is there room in professional sports for faith-driven athletes to openly live out their convictions?
