Will the reimagined Narnia remain faithful to the story’s Christian foundation?
Faith Survey: Consider what Netflix and Greta Gerwig have disclosed, then tell us what you think. Watching the trailer below is optional.
Why this matters to Faith Driven Consumers
Scripture identifies Christ as Creator and sustainer, teaches salvation by grace through faith, and describes renewal through the Holy Spirit. These truths help us evaluate whether a reimagining preserves C.S. Lewis’s meaning. Read John 1:1–3, Colossians 1:16–20, Ephesians 2:8–10, and Titus 3:5–6.
C.S. Lewis’s Christian worldview shapes Narnia’s story of creation, temptation, good and evil, sacrifice, redemption, and ultimate judgment. Aslan represents Christ, and the stories explore our relationship with Him: whom we trust, how we live, and where our hope rests.
What has been disclosed—and what we want to understand:
- Aslan’s portrayal. Meryl Streep voices Aslan, whose revealed appearance draws on David Bowie. How will the film communicate the identity, authority, and character C.S. Lewis gave Narnia’s Christ figure?
- Music, imagination, and transformation. Gerwig describes a rock-opera vision shaped by music, imagination, and personal transformation. Will it reinforce—or redirect—C.S. Lewis’s Christian understanding of hope and renewal?
- The move to 1955. The postwar setting changes the children’s cultural context and the story’s timeline. Will it preserve or reshape Narnia’s worldview?
- C.S. Lewis’s Christian writings. Gerwig has discussed reading Mere Christianity and Surprised by Joy. How will his theology influence the story audiences see?
